echocardiograph educationThe University of Kansas is an echocardiography school that offers a 21-month certificate program. The program is designed to produce knowledgeable cardiac sonographers through both academic coursework and clinical experiences. Upon completion of this program, the graduates will be qualified to work as an echocardiographer in various locations such as hospitals, clinics or doctors' offices. The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program is located at the University of Kansas Hospital for clinical experience while other aspects of the academic program are handled by the University of Kansas.

Similar to many other echocardiography schools, the program at the University of Kansas is very competitive. The admission requirements are a BA or BS with emphasis in Science or registered or licensed in radiography, nuclear medicine, nursing, ultrasound, or other two-year allied health certificate program. Completion in various college courses such as anatomy and physiology, physics, algebra, medical terminology and speech communication with a GPA of at least 2.5 is also required. Only four students are accepted into the program during the summer semester and eight during the fall and winter sessions.

The curriculum for the cardiac sonography program includes a very challenging course load. Students will spend 30 to 40 hours per week in the Cardiology Department dividing time between lectures and hands-on clinical work. In the academic lecture portion of the curriculum students will learn ultrasound physics and instrumentation as well as cardiac anatomy and physiology. Another part of the lecture curriculum includes learning about medical law and ethics, an aspect of the medical field that everyone in healthcare should be familiar with.
