According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, credentialing is voluntary for individuals in the field of echocardiography. Echocardiographers can increase their ranking from technician to technologist with additional credentialing.
Echocardiography Credentials
Individuals can receive certification from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
Certification Tests Offered by the CCI for Echocardiographers:
- Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS)
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS)
- Registered Phlebology Sonographer (RPhS)
- Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS)
*Candidates must also pass the Cardiovascular Science Examination
Certification Tests Offered by the ARDMS for Echocardiographers:
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)
- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)

Licensing for Echocardiographers
The Nation Board of Echocardiography offers exams for individuals interested in becoming licensed echocardiographers.
- ASCeXAM - demonstrates mastery in all areas of echocardiography
- PTExAM - demonstrates competence in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography
- ReASCE - a recertification examination that promotes continued excellence for individuals who have already passed the ASCexam
- RePTE - a recertification examination for individuals who have already passed the PTExAM and wish to renew their certification
