Echo Tech Salaries: Some of the best in the healthcare industry
Posted on 28. Jul, 2008 by admin in Uncategorized
An Echocardiographer position can be one of the most rewarding in the healthcare industry. With many benefits, such as a great salary, plenty of job opportunities available, and the chance to make a difference in others’ lives, an echo tech job is very rewarding in a variety of ways.
An Echo tech salary varies depending on the amount of education, the amount of experience and the certificate or degree you have. Another factor in determining salary for an echocardiographer is the employer type, such as a hospital, clinic or private practice as well as the city or town you live in.

One great advantage for a cardiac sonographer is that their expertise is in high demand all over the country. This gives echo techs the opportunity to choose where to live knowing there will most likely be more than one available position to choose from. Following are median echo tech salaries for some of America’s growing cities: Atlanta, $61,042, Philadelphia, $60,173 and Little Rock, $58,958. Some of the top paying West Coast cities for echocardiographers include San Jose, CA and Oakland, CA.
Echocardiographer positions are available by many different employers. A cardiac sonographer can set up a private practice where the median salary is $53,523. Working in a hospital setting echo techs will earn an average of $52,773 and private companies report a median salary of $54,992. An echocardiographer can also work for the government which pays on about $40,000 a year. There is a broad range of job opportunities for echocardiographers from the employer to the job location and salaries are great for all of these opportunities.

Education is another big factor that is considered when deciding on an echo tech’s salary. Echocardiographers can go through an associates training program and earn a certificate or can go through a bachelor’s program and earn a Bachelors Degree. The more education you have, the more competitive you will be. Years of experience also factor in to the salary. A cardiac sonographer with less than one year experience will earn around $45,500. A professional with 20+ years experience can earn around $58,971. Although there are many factors in an echocardiographer’s salary, education and years of experience are a big determinate.

Wanting to become an echo-tech. I hear that I should try to earn my associates degree at the most respected college I can find. I understand that employers don’t respect certificate programs. Does anyone suggest a good college for me to attend

Dave, I am also in school to become an Echo Tech. I live in Georgia and there are only 3 schools in the Atlanta area that offer the program. Two of which are private and one of them isn’t yet accredited and the 3rd college is Coosa Valley Tech in Rome, GA. (which is merging with another college and will soon be Georgia Northweatern Tech). Maybe that will help, granted you live remotely close to the area
Good Luck!

I am attending school at Florida Institute of Ultrasound where we are in our 6th week at this time. We will learn echo, vascular, abdominal, and OB/Gyn. Iam looking to get a little info as to where most of the jobs are for this field. The school I attend is wonderful we get tons of scan time and have already learned more in 6 weeks than I ever thought my brain could handle, including the physics part of it. I hear that the hardest is yet to come. I am looking forward to every minute of it. Right now I think that OB is where my heart is but we will see. I might have a change of heart before June 2010 (graduation).

I came from an accredited hospital based certificate program and found no one cared about it “just” being a certificate. Our program scores in the top 10 % on the registry. Good luck

Official US Dept. of Labor Job Name: Sonographer (Cardiac)
“echo tech” is an old name for this profession or someone who has not completed the registry. Please pass this on. In some medical circles “tech” is derogatory meaning less education and not correct for this demanding highly skilled profession.

I am about to be addmited into a non accredited Echocardiography program in Oakland, California, although I already had a Bachelor’s degree in a different field, but the cordinator of the program told me that I will be able to take my board Exam immediatly after the program. I want to know whether the issue of accreditation of the school will hurt me in the nearest future. Pls. Can somebody advice me whether to go for this unaccredited school. To get into the very few accredited schools is very difficult.
